Secure Middlebox-Assisted QUIC
While the evolution of the Internet was driven by the end-to-end model, it
has been challenged by many flavors of middleboxes over the decades. Yet, the
basic idea is still fundamental: reliability and security are usually realized
end-to-end, where the strong trend towards ubiquitous traffic protection
supports this notion. However, reasons to break up, or redefine the ends of,
end-to-end connections have always been put forward in order to improve
transport layer performance. Yet, the consolidation of the transport layer with
the end-to-end security model as introduced by QUIC protects most protocol
information from the network, thereby eliminating the ability to modify
protocol exchanges. In this paper, we enhance QUIC to selectively expose
information to intermediaries, thereby enabling endpoints to consciously insert
middleboxes into an end-to-end encrypted QUIC connection while preserving its
privacy, integrity, and authenticity. We evaluate our design in a distributed
Performance Enhancing Proxy environment over satellite networks, finding that
the performance improvements are dependent on the path and application layer
properties: the higher the round-trip time and loss, and the more data is
transferred over a connection, the higher the benefits of Secure

Variational methods with coupled Gaussian functions for Bose-Einstein condensates with long-range interactions. II. Applications
Bose-Einstein condensates with an attractive 1/r interaction and with
dipole-dipole interaction are investigated in the framework of the Gaussian
variational ansatz introduced by S. Rau, J. Main, and G. Wunner [Phys. Rev. A,
submitted]. We demonstrate that the method of coupled Gaussian wave packets is
a full-fledged alternative to direct numerical solutions of the
Gross-Pitaevskii equation, or even superior in that coupled Gaussians are
capable of producing both, stable and unstable states of the Gross-Pitaevskii
equation, and thus of giving access to yet unexplored regions of the space of
solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. As an alternative to numerical
solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, the stability of the
stationary condensate wave functions is investigated by analyzing the stability
properties of the dynamical equations of motion for the Gaussian variational
parameters in the local vicinity of the stationary fixed points. For
blood-cell-shaped dipolar condensates it is shown that on the route to collapse
the condensate passes through a pitchfork bifurcation, where the ground state
itself turns unstable, before it finally vanishes in a tangent bifurcation.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. A, some equations

Changes in the Relationship between Ionized and Total Calcium in Clinically Healthy Dairy Cows in the Period around Calving
We aimed to establish a model for prediction of iCa from tCa, using multivariable regressions with diverse blood constituents. Blood was taken from 14 cows at days −2, 0, 2, 4, 7, and 14 relative to parturition. Cows were clinically healthy, and no hypocalcaemia prophylaxis and treatment were applied. Total calcium and further parameters were determined from frozen serum. Ionized calcium, blood gases, and electrolytes were determined from heparin-stabilized blood samples. Linear regression between iCa and tCa was estimated. Precision improved only slightly using a multivariable model. Best precision was achieved when estimating the iCa:tCa ratio from other blood constituents. To identify the reason behind the poorly predictive value of tCa for iCa, the relative changes of iCa and tCa around calving were calibrated to the respective values of day −2 (=100%) for each cow. An increase in the iCa:tCa ratio was observed from 0.43 at day −2 to 0.48 at day 0, followed by a gradual decrease towards 0.43 at day 7. We conclude that routine measurement of iCa should be implemented in the diagnosis of hypocalcaemia. An optimized estimate of iCa from tCa with non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), beta-hydroxybutyric acid, cholesterol, and phosphorous as co-predictors is still poorly satisfying
